First and foremost it is, as always, a matter of preference.
But studies have shown the combination of caffeine and l-theanine can boost energy, while also elevating performance and mood, more than caffeine by itself. Especially on cognitively demanding tasks.
And the calmness effect of L-theanine when combined with caffeine can help you to avoid the "too much coffee" feeling and jitters. Besides giving your brain a boost, it's famous for supporting stress relief and curbing mental fatigue.
For example, you may notice a different feeling when drinking matcha or green tea vs. coffee. Matcha and green tea tend to deliver a "calm alertness", where as the effects of coffee can be more stressful.
The half life of caffeine is 4-6 hours. The dosage is similar to a small cup of coffee. In essence, try not to use Autofocus™ later in the day if you know that you are sensitive to caffeine and sleep.
Not studied but neither caffeine nor L-theanine have been proved to have side-effects at the smaller dosages present in Autofocus™.
